Eye floaters are quite a common occurrence in most people. When you look at objects against a bright back ground most people can notice specks, strings and cobweb like structures floating around. While sometimes it can be transparent objects floating around, at other times it can appear as black eye floaters.
Eye floaters are usually caused due to age when the jelly like vitreous humour starts changing into a more liquid form. The result is the formation of clumped microscopic structures in the vitreous humour. Sometimes the floaters can appear as black eye floaters or black spots may appear. Normal floaters are composed of particles of debris, cells, pigment or tissue fiber that keeps on moving and floating around the eye. When black eye floaters appear they can be the result of clumped dead blood cells that have banded together and casting shadows in the line of vision.
While the normal eye floaters are quite common, black eye floaters can be an indicator of a variety of underlying problems. Black eye floaters are generally formed when blood leaks from the eye vessels into the vitreous humour and forms clumps. The process can be amplified if neo vascularization takes place. This will amplify the process of blood leakage into the vitreous humour and the number of floaters increases manifold. This process is the side effect of diabetes and is known as diabetes retinopathy. Undiagnosed black eye floaters can lead to retinal detachment. The blood vessels that develop into the vitreous humour keep s on tugging at the retina with eye movement and ultimately lead to retinal detachment which in turn can lead to permanent loss of eye sight.
Eye floaters in small numbers do not signal any emergency situation. However if you notice black eye floaters and their number multiplying in a short span of time then you should immediately seek medical intervention. Timely intervention can save your eye sight. Eye floaters can be treated with surgery and also with laser treatment. The nature of treatment will depend on the severity of the case.
The process of formation of eye floaters begins quite early. Through out our life a part of the semi solid jelly like vitreous humour keeps on changing from the semi solid state to the liquid state and in the process floaters appear as clumps of tissue fiber, cells and pigments. The process of formation of eye floaters is aggravated by head injury, stress, age and diabetes.
If you have been experiencing floaters for quite sometime now, there is no reason to panic. In fact it is much better to ignore them in the daily course of your life. They become a nuisance only when they appear directly in the line of vision. Most of the time ophthalmologists do not prescribe undergoing any procedure to treat the eye floaters as they are generally benign. But if black eye floaters are the result of diabetic retinopathy and is accompanied by flashes of light and too much blurring vision then immediate medical attention should be sought.
